NFS Underground 2 LAN and VPN multiplayer
What the references agree on
PCGamingWiki lists LAN for six players, other modes for four, and URL races for six. It also lists UDP 3658 and no UPnP. nfsu2.net repeats those figures. Two write-ups match, so the caps and the port are stated as fact. A 2006 NFS-Planet article mentioned Hamachi as a way to fake a LAN after the official shutdown. That is a historical pointer, not a current installer.
- Every PC needs its own legal install. This site does not host the game.
- Put the PCs on one LAN, or on a VPN that behaves like one. UPnP will not open the port for you.
- Allow UDP 3658 on the firewall.
- URL mode is the six-car room. Other modes stay at four.
- Saves stay in %LOCALAPPDATA%\NFS Underground 2\ on modern Windows, per PCGamingWiki.
Community servers are a different path
moio9/NFS-Online-Server is a community server for several NFS games, with an ASI client and a public host named brake.go.ro. An older README and a September 2026 trawling.dev summary disagree on the port numbers. Use the README you actually cloned. Do not paste a stale port into a firewall rule and call it current.
I used PCGamingWiki and the 2006 NFS-Planet note. I did not run a LAN session, so the page stops where those sources stop.

Questions
Is GameRanger required?
No current source checked on 2026-10-28 required a specific lobby program. Any VPN that presents a LAN can match the PCGamingWiki model. Hamachi is only the 2006 example.
Why can’t I see a friend’s race?
Different mode caps, a blocked UDP 3658, or a VPN that is not a single broadcast domain. The LAN fix page lists those checks.
